  The Canadian defence thought that it had dealt with the threat posed by Shaw as the 19-year-old San Diego Wave forward sought to make the breakthrough on home soil at Snapdragon Stadium. Torrential rain had, however, left the field almost unplayable and a backpass went dramatically wrong.

  The ball never looked like reaching Canada goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan, and so it proved as crazy conditions conspired to tee up Shaw for the opening goal of the game. The teenager displayed impressive composure when getting to the loose ball first, as she clipped a well-taken finish over the onrushing Sheridan.
