Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder and BBC Sport pundit Jermaine Jenas says Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino must strengthen his attack this summer if the club is to have any chance of competing for the Premier League title again, and believes a Monaco star would be the ideal addition.
Once again, the north London outfit narrowly missed out on winning the trophy for the first time following its introduction in 1992, with the likes of Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Son Heung-Min shining in the forward positions.
However, when the former suffered an ankle injury in the win against Sunderland in September, Pochettino’s men drew three of the five top flight matches he was absent for – against West Bromwich Albion, Bournemouth and Leicester City – and an extra six points from those fixtures would have allowed them to fight Chelsea until the very last kick.
Last summer’s arrivals Vincent Janssen and Moussa Sissoko have been particularly disappointing, and the duo could be shown the exit door at the end of the campaign.
With Spurs conceding just 27 goals in 36 Premier League games this season prior to the visit to Leicester City on Thursday night, Jenas believes they are strong enough at the back but need some reinforcements going forward and he believes Monaco winger Thomas Lemar could be the answer.
The 34-year-old told BBC Sport: “The attacking part of their team is the area where Tottenham can improve, and I would bring in two more forwards to play behind Harry Kane.
“The likes of Everton’s Ross Barkley and Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez have been mentioned, but I like Monaco’s Thomas Lemar who is a very good player and definitely fits the mould.
“Spurs need quality and quantity in those positions so they can rotate if they have to without it affecting the team because I don’t think Moussa Sissoko and Georges-Kevin N’Koudou, who both arrived last summer, have been the answer at all.”
